The iPad 2 comes with several applications, including Safari, Mail, Photos, Video, Youtube, iPod, iTunes,App StoreiBooks, Maps, Notes, Calendar, Contacts, Camera, Photo Booth*, and Spotlight Search.[30]Several are improved versions of applications developed for the iPhone or of applications for the Mac.

The iPad syncs with iTunes on a Mac or Windows PC.[31]Apple ported its iWorksuite from the Mac to the iPad, and sells pared down versions of PagesNumbers, and Keynote apps in the App Store[32]. They also did Photo Booth, and some of iLife with iMovie, and Garageband. Although the iPad 2 is not designed to replace a mobile phone, a user can use a wired headset or the built-in speaker and microphone and place phone calls over Wi-Fi or 3G using a VoIP application.[33] The iPad has lots of third party applications available for it; as of September 1, 2010, there were 25,000 iPad specific apps on the App Store.[34] The iPad 2 cannot run the Xcode development suite since it uses iOS.[35]
